Empowering Circular Economy

Is this wave of sustainability a real truth or current need of an hour or is it just another hoax or marketing gimmick at global level, with the tag of being Green?

The global warming, climate change, species extinction, increasing pollution at local levels and many other phenomena are well known problems with theoretical solutions like going carbon negative or sustainable. Internationally many groups tried to solve these problems, which were real and struck to us through many incidents. Everyone had found out that these issues cannot be solved simply by advancing the technology in one direction, but it needs to have inter-disciplinary design thinking and participation from all walks of life. The question ‘How?’ has the answer of ‘Circular Economy’.

In order to understand Circular Economy, we should understand Linear Economic Practices. Linear economy highlights ‘Take-Make-Dispose’ approach. This approach has led us in raw material scarcity, increasing demand in every sector, inefficiency in resource consumption, degrading environmental parameters and most of all, dealing with increasing heaps of wastes. To get rid of these things a term was coined in early 20th century, that was Circular Economy.

Circular Economy signifies the efficient recycling of everything before its waste value becomes zero. Instead of throwing things away, Circular Economy focuses on reducing, reusing, repairing, and recycling resources for as long as possible. Think of it like giving things a longer lifespan! It considers waste has great value and can be turned into something valuable, with efficient operations and the waste itself can be made valuable by optimizing its usage and creation pathways. This approach can reduce waste, save resources, and protect the environment by creating less pollution and reducing the need for new resource extraction.

The Circular Economy is said to have 6 pillars. Each pillar has its significance and contribution in order to establish the circular economy. Those are Governmental, Economic, Environmental, Behavioural, Societal and Technological. Making the circular economy a reality requires everyone to play their part. Governments can set economic policies or environmental regulations that encourage sustainable practices. Businesses can design products that are easily reused or recycled and consumers can choose eco-friendly products and reduce their own waste.
